2017-08-27 – Berlin
While our hotel might have been lacking in some areas, they went all out on the breakfast menu. They had Asia, Indian and German entrees on the buffet. Some of the group went wild over the food saying that they wised that they could have this every morning (Debbie just ignored those comments as she doesn’t cook breakfast and it will never happen.)
Today was the train to Berlin. After last year, the group had more finesse. They didn’t go down the track like a gaggle of geese quacking all the way. They were able to read the signs for the track, find their car, store their bags and kicked a lady out of their reserved seats. (Joyce can be intimidating – the lady jumped right up and almost dove across the aisle). There were multiple seat types in the car – private room, (Debbie wanted one but Les Cheap girls don’t do private rooms), seat & table, or seats. A vendor does come through selling food but it seemed near impossible to buy something as they ran through the car. (Debbie thinks that they flip coins to see who has to walk through the cars and there is a bet as to how fast they can get to the end of the train). The group was confused because car number 4 (their car) was extremely popular. There seemed to be more people on this car than any other. (Open sitting is available if the seat is not reserved. – Confusing huh?) This involved a lot of bag bumping, moving, kids running through the car and generally being thumped every 5 minutes interfering with any serious sleeping.
The only event that occurred was when Larry thought he heard the bell that the train was arriving at Berlin. He yelled at Debbie as she came out of the toilet that they were pulling into the station. (Larry was already not pleased with Debbie as she had walked down 3 cars just to say that she had walked through a train like the Mission Impossible girl or Jason Bourne. She also wanted to look in those private cars.) “Run, Debbie, Run”. Debbie looked around and couldn’t find Tom Cruise or Jason Bourne plus the train was traveling through fields so did not run. (Debbie thinks that Larry just wanted to test her readiness).

The train eventually arrived in Berlin’s impressive station. They were able to successfully get off the train and into a taxi. They are staying at a flat in a quiet area of Berlin. Thankfully, it is on the first floor so the bags were not wrestled up the stairs. Still no luggage for Joyce – Day 2.
That night the group ate at a German restaurant, Klement’s. Larry and Jerry had goulash while Debbie and Joyce has “Klement’s” Schnitzel. Debbie did not actually intend to order this but got this dish. It was stuffed with pickles. Debbie refused to believe this until Joyce forced her to look at the pickles. Okay, still adventurous eating for Debbie – Jason Bourne style.
Schnitzel should not have pickles.
