2018-10-18 #1 Irish Attraction

Today a visit to the most popular Irish sightseeing site was scheduled. Can you name the site? Go ahead, write it on a piece of paper. See if you can guess.

Ready? The answer is the Cliffs of Moher. (Larry and Debbie went to the Cliffs and still would have missed it). The Cliffs have been featured in multiple movies such as “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince”, “Leap Year” and “The Princess Bride”. Geographic Moment: The Cliffs of Moher are sea cliffs located in County Clare, Ireland.  The cliffs run for about 14 kilometers. At their southern end, they rise 390 ft above the Atlantic Ocean at Hag’s Head, and, eight kilometers to the north, reach their maximum height of 702 ft just north of O’Brien’s Tower,  a round stone tower near the midpoint of the cliffs built in 1835 then the cliffs continue at lower heights. The Cliffs are home to over 60,000 nesting sea birds and the popular puffins can be seen from April to July. (The group did not see any popular puffin but thought that you would like to know that you could).

The visitor’s center is really cool. It is built inside the hillside. You can make a postcard and do other cool things. Debbie was dragged out of the building into the cold and wind by the others. (She was busy showing other tourists how to make postcards).

There are two paths that run along the cliffs, an official path back away from the cliff and the unofficial path along the edge of the cliff. Debbie, our little rule follower and fearful of cliffs, stayed on the official path. She climbed over wire fences to stay on that path. Larry and Joyce were more unofficial path people (no surprise there) while Jerry’s path was determined by the amount of mud on the path. They hiked up and down the path and splashed in and out of the mud(. Debbie did deliver some stink eyes when people made her step in the mud).

They ate lunch outside at a picnic table where Debbie proved her bravery by chasing birds away from Joyce. She was pretty successful except for the German couple right behind them that kept feeding the birds.

After lunch, the group began the drive home battling the bus traffic for the attractions. Debbie tried to ride the middle console. (Remember, they are driving on the left side of the road). On the way home, they stopped at Dunguaire Castle. This is a castle along the road and close to our flat. Larry thinks that he could live there. The group had trouble getting Larry into the car to go home.

  1. Lisa left a comment for Lindsey that she agrees with the suggestion of the castle for her wedding. Lisa thinks that Ireland would be a good destination wedding location. She would also hike with Larry on the unofficial trails. But make sure she chooses an appropriate time of year!
