2018-09-29 Outlander

HHR:  I heard that you left Edinburgh.

Joyce:  Yes, our time in Edinburgh was finished.  We had walked the Royal Mile plenty of times and Larry was talking about getting a kilt.

Larry:  Jerry and I was spending a lot of time watching the car from the window and thought that a kilt would add to our fierceness.

Joyce:  I knew it was time to leave.

HHR:   Where did you go?

Joyce:  We headed for the Highlands with some stops on the way.

HHR:  What are the Highlands.

Larry:  I am surprised that you would ask that.  It is lands that are high.

Jerry:  Let me step in here.  The Highlands are the Scottish Highlands are a mountainous region encompassing northwest Scotland.

HHR:  Where did you stop first?

Joyce:  We went to the Blackness Castle near the village of Blackness.

Debbie:  It was raining and we parked a long way so we had to run up the road while other vehicles passed us on the way to a really close parking lot.

Larry:  Yes but we got to see how the boats were just left in the mud when the tide when out.  You also wanted more exercise.

HHR:  If we could come back to Blackness.

Debbie:  I was very excited when we got there because it is where Outlander, yes OUTLANDER, is filmed.  It is where the prison scenes and Jack Randall’s office is located.  Jaimie and Claire have been there.

Joyce:  We were all not familiar with Outlander but understand that it is a big deal to some people (Debbie).  I think she gasped when she saw the Outlander sign and kept trying to get in the Outlander tour group that was there.

Debbie:  Everyone knows the Outlander series of books and TV series.  I immediately texted Jennifer and Lindsey.  They wanted to get on a plane and come over.

HHR:  How did you get Debbie to leave?

Larry:  Well, we got here a free Outlander pamphlet of all the shooting locations and let her hold it in her hand.  She is busy making plans to do an Outlander tour now.  We just keep telling her that the next place is an Outlander location.

HHR:  Where did you go next?

Joyce:  Our next stop was Kelpsie

Debbie:  It was also cold there and we had to walk / run to the main area.

Larry:  You can’t have it both ways.  You can’t complain about steps and then not appreciate it when we plan a running activity for you.

Jerry:  Let’s be honest here, it was raining.

Debbie:  Yes, and my umbrella flipped

HHR:  To get back on track, what are the Kelpsies?

Debbie:  They are giant horse heads.

HHR:  Giant as in 6 ft tall?

Larry:  No, giant as in 100 ft tall.

HHR:  What is the purpose of the horse heads?

Debbie:  They are some artistic thing.  You can go inside the heads but it is still cold

Joyce:  It is a representation of how horses played an important role in the economy in the past.

Larry:  We did eat lunch there and I got beans.

Debbie:  We got some extra stuff because the server likes “Friday Night Lights” and I told him my Dad was a football coach.

HHR:  What did you do next?

Debbie:  We drove to our new accommodations because Joyce said that she had enough art for the day.

HHR:  Did you have any issues getting to the new accommodations?

Joyce:  Well, it was not on my GPS but I had studied the notes.  There was an uphill gravel road.  Debbie said that I shot up the road like the Dukes of Hazzard.  I did notice some gasps in the car and that the gravel shot into the air.

HHR:  What will you be doing here?

Joyce:  I have lots of hiking planned.  I will just tell Debbie that the Outlander is filming anywhere that I want her to go.

2018-09-28 Detained

Today, the group had an appointment with Parliament.  Educational Moment:  This is Debbie’s interpretation.  When Scotland became a part of the United Kingdom a long time ago, Scotland became part of the United Kingdom’s parliament.  In 1997, they devolved and created a Parliament in Scotland.  The group leaned what devolved meant in their tour.

So, how does it work?  The Scottish Parliament at Holyrood can pass laws on devolved matters – in general, those affecting most aspects of day-to-day life in Scotland. The UK Parliament at Westminster can pass laws on reserved matters – in general, those with a UK-wide or international.

Joyce had the group there early for a tour.  Going into Parliament meant that the tourist had to go through a security check.  Below is an exert of what the group now refers to as the “Detainment Incident”.

Security:  Sir, we need you to step out of line.

Larry:  Uh-oh.  Whispers to Debbie “I think that I have my pocketknife”.  The other three turn away.

Security:  “Sir, we have to call the Police over to talk to you.”

Larry:  “No problem, no problem” (Yes, Larry problem).

Police officer: “Show me how it works”

Larry:  Yes sir. You push this button and blah, blah, blah

Joyce:  That is a big looking knife.  He will never get away.

Police Officer:  “Do you need it for fishing?  You see it is against the law in Scotland to have a knife like this unless you need it for something like fishing.”

Larry: ” No, I don’t fish. ”  Debbie thinks Larry, he just opened the door for you and you slammed it shut.

Police Officer:  “What about camping?  Do you need it for camping.?”

Suddenly, Larry looks like the light-bulb came on.  Larry said “No, I don’t camp but I need it to open my medicine”.

The Police Officer has a stunned look as he says  to Larry. “Sir, do you want to give me the knife”.

Larry:  “Yes, I want to give the knife to you badly so so badly.:

Police Officer:  I am going to have you fill out a form that says you gave the knife up to me and you will be in the database.

Larry:  Yes, sir.  It is spelled J E R R Y  W E R K I N G  and I live in Virginia.  (Not really – he gave his real name).

After all the excitement, Larry was cleared and the tour began.   The group took a tour with their guide, Tom, and they could understand what he said.   (This is more important than you may realize.  Debbie secretly listens to people to see if she can understand them.  It is about a 50 percent now).  The new Parliament building has lots of symbolic items that are not defined because the architect died before he told anyone what they meant.  So people just make up stuff about the symbols.  Today was Tom’s last day for tours.  How exciting to have a detained law breaker on the last tour.

Next, they went to Holyrood Palace.  Cultural Moment;  The Palace of Holyrood,  is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland, Queen Elizabeth II.  You can’t take pictures inside but the Royal family was really happy to see them.  The four walked around the ruins outside Hollyrood and took lots of pictures.  They also walked around the gardens where the queen has her annual garden party but no one asked if they wanted any drinks.

They had an exciting trip home.  They rode the bus home on the top of a double decker.  Larry had the front seat on the top of the bus.  An Edinburgh local, let’s call him Mac, looking like his girlfriend had just thrown him out with a suitcase, garbage bag and a duffel bag moved up to the top where there were no seats.  Mac got so excited when Larry got up to get off the bus that Mac dragged all his assorted luggage to block the aisle trapping Debbie and Jerry on the bus as Joyce and Larry exited.  Joyce stood on the sidewalk yelling “Get off the Bus!  Get off the Bus now!”  Luckily, the driver intervened and allowed them to get off the bus.

Hard Hitting Reporter (HHR):  Now that you are in Edinburgh what is your goal of the day?

Joyce:  Well, we are hard core tourists so we wanted to go to visit Edinburgh Castle first.

HHR:  Did you take John Pierre to the caste?

Joyce:  No, we decided to get more of the local ambiance and take the bus.  We even pretended that we had to look for exact change.  We walked in single file to the bus stop and huddled together in the cold.

HHR:  Did you have any issues with getting to the castle?

Joyce:  People were very friendly on the bus and gave us all sorts of advice.  One lady even got off the bus to point us in the correct direction.  Debbie thinks that we must look clueless.

Debbie:   We thought that it would be very difficult to miss a castle towering over the city. Turns out there are several ways to get to the castle and people feel that you need to know those options.

HHR:  Could you tell us a little about the castle?

Larry:  Ask Debbie, she seems to want to talk about it all the time.

Debbie:  I like to share educational moments with the readers. Educational Moment:  Edinburgh Castle was built on a bluff overlooking the city.  It is a great defensive location.  Here is where MacBeth was murdered and Malcolm married Princess Margaret.  The castle was begun in the 11th century.  in the 14th century to the Jacobite rising of 1745. Research undertaken in 2014 identified 26 sieges in its 1100-year-old history, giving it a claim to having been “the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world”.  The castle also houses the Scottish regalia, known as the Honours of Scotland and is the site of the Scottish National War Memorial and the National War Museum of Scotland.

Larry:  Debbie, I think that you are sharing too much.

HHR:  Yes, Debbie that is really more than we wanted to know.  What did you do next?

Joyce:  We started down the Royal Mile.  This is the mile that connects the Edinburgh Castle and HolyRood.

Jerry:  I was hungry so voted for food next.

Larry:  There are several attractions on the Royal Mile and we visited a lot of them.  I liked Canongate.

HHR:  How did you get home?

Debbie:  It started to rain at the end of the mile.  I stood in the rain for quite a while.  I wasn’t really happy with the rain.

Joyce:  I knew how to get home.  So, I led them through the rain – home.

Debbie:  Yes, we walked a wet un-royal mile

2018-09-26 Arrival

HHR:  How did the four fare overnight?

Larry:  Well, I woke up not feeling well and did not want to go down for the breakfast buffet.

Debbie:  I felt fine.  I made it through the night and woke up hungry.

Larry:  I am surprised that you were hungry after all the ginger candy that you ate during the night.

Debbie:  I don’t want to discuss it.  I didn’t blow. I made it.

HHR:  How was your entry into the U.K.?

Joyce:  We embarked in Newcastle, U.K.  Passport control was not helpful.  They kept looking at my passport.

HHR:  Have you done something to make passport control suspicious?

Joyce:  There was the incident of shouting at a car in Amsterdam but don’t think that should hinder my entry into the UK.

HHR:  How was driving on the left side?

Larry:  The U.K. has established a driving school for new U.K. drivers with multiple round-abouts one after the other.  Joyce did a great job driving on the left side.

Joyce:  We did have an issue with Debbie trying to ride on top of the console.  Larry also had to pry her hand off the armrest when we stopped.

Debbie:  Joyce has nerves of steel.  She drove from Newcastle to Edinburgh Scotland with few issues.

HHR:  Where was your first stop in Edinburgh?

Jerry:  Our first stop was the mall.  We noticed that Larry and Debbie got all excited that we were stopping at a mall.

Larry:  Yes, we couldn’t believe that Joyce had put this as a vacation stop.  Debbie and I started making a list of stores to visit.

Jerry:  Well actually, the first stop was the  Royal Yacht Britannia.  It is docked at a mall.

Joyce:  This was the queen’s royal yacht until 1997.   The queen used to visit the islands in the summer and use it for receptions.  If you watched the Crown, the boat is featured on some of the shows.

Debbie:  I felt at home on the boat. Those other countries didn’t invite me to their royal yacht because they knew that I would like this one the best.

HHR:  Isn’t it true that you have not been on any other royal yacht?

Debbie:  Well, yes that is true.  Have you ever gotten a stink eye HHR?    This yacht has a guest room, a dining room, and a receiving room. All that was missing was a picture of me.  You can also rent the yacht for a dinner.  Larry’s birthday is soon.  Maybe we could have the party on the ship.

HHR:  Where did you go once escorted off the boat

Joyce:  We were not escorted, we left and drove to the flat.

HHR:  Did you have any issues?

Joyce:  Well yes, there was a garage parking space but it was very small and difficult to park.

HHR:  I heard that there might have been some tense moments.

Debbie:  No, we just all exited the car at the same time to check the lines.  We remember Sweden and the tickets.

Joyce:  We found a parking place on the street where we could watch the car from the flat.

Larry:  We never parked in the garage again.

HHR:  Did you have any experience with the Scottish people.

Joyce:  Well, we did go to the grocery store and couldn’t understand anything one of the clerks said.  I had to ask Debbie what they said.

Debbie:  I didn’t know understand either.  We had to have an interpreter.   I have asked Larry to start using his Sean Connery voice.

2018-09-25 To Blow or Not To Blow

Today was a transition day.  The group had a car and were leaving the Netherlands behind.  They were going to Scotland on an overnight ferry.  Luckily, our Hard Hitting Reporter went along on the trip to report on the change.

HHR:  Were the owners sorry to see you leave?

Larry:  They were very sad to see us leave and asked for our pictures at the Dutch door.

Debbie:  I think that we asked for those pictures.

Larry:  Well, I am sure that they were going to ask us and will probably put up on the wall to start a wall of fame.

Jerry:  I am positive that I saw a tear in Pauline’s eye.

HHR:  Is it true that you are going on an overnight ferry to the U.K.?

Joyce:  Yes, we will be landing in Newcastle

HHR:  There is a rumor that a couple of you have had some seasickness issues in the past.  Is this true?

Joyce:  Yes, I have had issues in the past and am prepared.  I have a prescription patch from the doctor.

Debbie:  Yes, it is true that I have issues but I am not going to have any this time.  So, I am prepared.

Larry:  Are you crazy?  You are not prepared.  I have seen you on a boat before.  What about the fjord cruise where you laid face down on the table?  I have to share a room with you.

Debbie:  I was just having an off day.

HHR:  To sum it up, you are not prepared and may be sick.

Debbie:   I don’t want to talk about it.  Let’s move on.

HHR:  What did you do after you checked out?  BTW, how was the driving?

Joyce:  My driving was great.  I was a little cautious because of the bikes.  I think they are out to get me either when I am on foot or in acar.  I thought that I saw my picture posted on a pole.

HHR:  Where did you go next?:

Larry:  Well Joyce wanted to see the beach and we felt that there would be fewer bikers or at least the sand would make them go slower.

Joyce:  I had arranged an outing to the North Sea.  We went to a national park, Zuid-Kennemerland.  It has lots of little shells which we all felt would entertain Debbie.

Debbie:  Hey who left with a pocket full of shells?  Not me.  I was more interested in the 80 year old man walking into the North Sea for his morning swim.  I tried to convince the others to follow him in.

Jerry:  I could have done the swim but didn’t have my swim cap with me and didn’t want to get swimmer’s ear.

HHR:  Where did you go next?

Joyce:  We went to the Museum Zaanse Schans.  It is a folklore museum of the Dutch and local “Zaanse” traditions.  (Think Dutch Williamsburg).

HHR:  What did you see there?

Debbie:  We saw a weaver’s house full of looms.  They made cloth for canvas sails.  The lady said that you had to be really strong to be a weaver and she kept looking at me.  I think because she saw how strong that I was.

Larry:  No, I think that you were standing too close.  We also saw a cooper.

Debbie:  I saw you trying to touch the tools in the tool shed.  I was not standing too close.  I just needed to see.

HHR:  Let’s get back on track here, Debbie and Larry.  I understand that there were windmills, a cheese shop and a wooden shoe shop.

Joyce:   Yes, it is amazing how fast they can make the shoes.  It takes 2 hours handmade or about 5 minutes with molds and instruments.  The shoes are waterproof which you need with all the canals and rain.  I tried a pair on.

Debbie:  We all wanted to buy a pair for our children because we really care about them.  However, they would not fit in our suitcases.  I was also afraid one of my children would not like them and step on my toes with the shoes on.

Larry:  I was impressed with the windmills.  The once we saw made linseed oil.  The person that runs the windmill runs up and down all day.  It looks like really hard work.

Jerry:  I would rather swim in the North Sea than run a windmill.

HHR:  Tell me about your trip to the ferry:

Joyce: We had to be at the ferry by 4:30 and left with plenty of time.  Ida, our GPS had the latitude and longitude to work with.  Unfortunately, Ida failed to see the need for roads and tried to drive us directly into the North Sea.

Larry:  Once we got back on track, Ida took us to a little ferry which held maybe 4 cars.  We were pretty sure this was not the overnight ferry.  It was impressive the way that Joyce parked and sprinted onto the ferry for directions.

Jerry:  Joyce worked the crew.  They waved us onto the ferry and then gave us special directions for the big ferry as we left.

Larry:  We still had to get to the big ferry.  Time was ticking.  So we tore off to the terminal.

Debbie:  When we arrived, we didn’t know where to line up.  Joyce yelled for assistance.

Larry:  Jerry and I volunteered Debbie.  She is a spry little thing and we knew that she could beat us in a sprint.

Debbie:  I have to admit Larry and Jerry, it felt more like I was pushed out of the car than volunteered.  Luckily, I was able to fight my way through all the people.

Larry:  No, we had confidence in you and Joyce as runners.  I mean you are the navigator.

HHR:  Did you have trouble leaving?

Joyce:  Well for some reason, they did not like my passport.  I really think that they just didn’t want me leave the Netherlands.

HHR:  How were your rooms?

Larry:   The rooms were small but made for four.  Luckily, we only had 2 people in the room.  There was the extra added benefit that one could sit on the toilet and take a shower.  I might need this feature later if Debbie blows.  I can just sit her on the toilet and spray her down.

Debbie:  I have ginger candy in all my pockets.  I am not going to blow.

HHR:  How did the night go?

Joyce:  We all went to the buffet around the world.  Debbie held up well.  We did notice that people listed to the right or left when they walked or rather staggered back to the table. Sometimes we went in directions that we had not intended.

Larry:  I started feeling bad because of my sinuses. So we went back to the room around 8.

Debbie:  I think that Larry was sick from all of the stress worrying about whether I would blow.  However, he was asleep by 8:05 so wasn’t too worried.

HHR:  What did you do?

Debbie:  Well,  I sat in  bed rocking back and forth, back and forth eating ginger candy.  I discovered an extra added benefit of the room was being able to hear our next-door neighbor.  He was a jolly person and laughed quite a bit.

Larry:  I woke up around midnight and saw a green glow coming from Debbie’s bunk.  She was asleep so she made it through

HHR:  As of midnight, Debbie was holding her own and hadn’t blown yet. This story is to be continued.

2018-09-24 We are French

Jerry was ready for the show.  He saw that the other three came back each day so felt that he could survive a trip to Amsterdam.  Plus, he started feeling better.  All four traveled to Amsterdam today.

The other three took Jerry to the Pancake House so he could have the full pancake experience.  The four followed a couple of podcasts through the city. (Don’t they sound sophisticated?  Podcasts!  They are lucky that they didn’t get run down by a bike while listening. ) Mostly, they stood in one place looking around while listening and chose to move as one pack.  Today, the picture are highlights of their days in Amsterdam.

At the end of the day, they rode the metro to a suburb to pick up a car.  Yes all you bikers, the group has wheels now.  They have leased a Renault French car for a month.  There were extensive driving instructions by our customer service guy whose name sounded like Ferry.  Several times during the instruction session, Ferry said “I can’t touch the car or make an adjustment because it is your car”.  His last statement was “Well, you have my number and you know how to call it but don’t.  I can’t help you any more.”.  (Debbie called it a giant kiss off).
But, Rita was always there to support viagra on line him. As the group slowly rolled off the lot, Debbie wondered if Ferry was worried about them (She thinks not).  Joyce did a stunning job at getting them to the flat with few cross words exchanged in the car.  Joyce thinks that the French license plate will get her some sympathy from the other drivers as they will think that the group is French.  Debbie has been practicing looking French as she peers out the window.  Larry yells out “Oui” at random times.

2018-09-23 Amsterdam Part 2

Jerry was still down for the day.  (The group thinks that he is still suffering from bike intimidation.)  Joyce had gotten an early time to visit the Anne Frank House.  The three made it to the museum just in time  as it began raining so were able to walk right in.  The Museum is well done and respectful.  A visitor goes into the museum and uses an audio guide until they get to the house.  The rooms where the Frank family hid are viewed in silence.  It is hard to believe the events that happened on this quiet street.

After the early start and the rain, the three decided to try out Dutch pancakes.  Debbie scored well on her choice.  Other members of her party were eyeing her selection with envy.  (This is a good thing as Debbie lost some street cred with the quality of the hot dogs from Day 1.  Debbie could help the Pancake House with their organization).

It was still raining and they can’t really show up at the flat right after lunch.  (It might upset Jerry’s suspected binge watching).  They decided to visit a house boat museum to see how people lived on houseboats over the years.  It was nice to get out of the rain for a while.  They sat down with another tourist to watch a movie and enjoy the dryness until the woman began to cough and cough.  Larry got up and left quickly followed by Joyce.  Debbie hung in for about 30 seconds more and also bolted.  (She didn’t want to appear rude or anything but thinks that the lady was trying to clear the room for her friends.)

They continued the Amsterdam sloshing tour down the streets to the next museum.  This was not a particularly pleasant walk as cars kept splashing water on them.  There were some inappropriate words said during this walk.  At one point, they visited a cheese store and cheese museum to get out of the rain. (They gave out lots of samples and cheese was purchased.)  They went into a canal house museum to see how the rich lived.  (They did not have bicycles. The rich don’t try to hit poor tourists with their bikes.  Maybe the canal house owner made their money when they were hit by a bike.  Just saying, bikers turn away from your tourist predatory life and rewards could be huge).

The end of the day saw the trio riding on a packed bus.  So packed that when people boarded, Debbie was lifted off her feet.  She became close and personal friends with the couple behind her.  Can you spell claustrophobic?

2018-09-22 Amsterdam

Today was the “Show”.  They big day to face the bikers in Amsterdam.  However, Jerry was not feeling well and could not go.  (The other three had their suspicions that he might not be up to facing the bikers.).

So off they went to Amsterdam.  Cultural Moment:  Amsterdam is derived from a village being built around a dam of the river, Amster.   Get it? Amsterdam. Most of the Netherlands is below sea level.  Dykes, dams and pumping of water helps keep the water away.

It was amazing how many bikes were in Amsterdam.  The bikes have no mercy and the riders seem to go as fast as they can.  It is everyone for themselves.   The three think maybe there is a reward system if you take down a pedestrian.   The train station has walkers, bikers, trams, trains and buses all leaving at the same time.  Our team walked in a V shape to try to cover all sides.  After zigzagging down the street and dodging a bus and tram, they decided to take a canal tour.

The trio learned that things get thrown in the canals.  On an annual basis, about 50 cars are pulled from the canals followed by 500  sunken boats and approximately 15,000 bikes.  (Debbie thinks that she might have to stop the other two from throwing some bikes into the canal).  Amsterdam buildings are not straight because they are not on secure ground.

After the boat ride, they went on a walk through Amsterdam.  One of the  surreal moments was walking down a busy shopping street with an organ grinder playing  only to step into a small peaceful church, De Papegaai Catholic Church.  The group also visited the Begijnhof .  Cultural Moment:  The Begijnhof  leads to a medieval inner courtyard where the women of the Catholic sisterhood lived.  There are churches and houses for the single women.   One of the tour guides traveling through commented that the Mayflower Pilgrims prayed in one of the churches before the ship left.  (This is unconfirmed).

Now for some exciting news.  Joyce and Larry joined the hot dog across Europe campaign for the day.  (Debbie says that some were more excited than others about participating).

The final stop for the day was the Flower Market.  When Debbie saw the flowers, she might have squealed.  It was overwhelming.  There were flowers and people everywhere.

Debbie, Joyce, and Larry headed back to Haarlem diving and dodging bikes on the way back.  They didn’t feel like that they had successfully handled the “show”.  (There is suspicion that Jerry stayed home and watched TV.)

Note:  We have been off the grid for the last few days.  We were in an area with no internet coverage but no one seemed to have noticed.  There will be some double entries the next couple of days as we catch up.
