The day began with a visit to the Hawaiian Style Cafe.  Entrance is guarded by a fierce woman.    Let’s call her, Flo.  There is a waiting list but Flo is not always available to take one’s name.   Then one must rely on surviving customers for an explanation.  When Flo called her name, Debbie was told she didn’t request a table so they went back on the list.  (Debbie thinks it was punishment because she saw empty tables.  Wendy told here to get a grip). After a sufficient repentancewait, Flo called their name  and they were seated at the empty table.  (Debbie tries to shout “I knew it” but was muffled by Wendy.)  Both ordered humongous pancakes.  On the up side, the meal was great at a reasonable price and the waitress that took their order was very gracious.  (Maybe Debbie was just hungry).

Surprise!  Part of the group is back in Hawaii.  Good thing that the last trip  just wrapped up.  Debbie is returning to Hawaii.  Larry is staying at home.  He says that he is saving up for the trip to Oregon and the 2018 Europe trip.  (We know that you are hopping up and down with excitement for the Europe trip).

Off to Pololu Valley for an intense hike.  Unfortunately, the closer that the pair got to the trail head the more that it rained.  By the time they arrived at the entrance, the trail was muddy.  After one look at the trail, they decided  that the advance people should not wipe themselves out the first day and did not think they could drag the other one back up the trail if there was a mud issue (Debbie had  already contributed heavily to the new Eng wing of the Kohalo Hospital with her broken finger in 2016 and didn’t want to go for a second wing).

Next stop Keokea Park for a picnic lunch.  Yep, they actually packed a lunch.  Who are these people?  Has Wendelin every picnicked on vacation before?

Onward to Lapakahi State Park.  The good news is that it was still raining and no longer sunny.  It was like walking around with a mister.  (No, not a mister man but a mister that mists water).  Not an unpleasant feeling but left one feeling like undried clothes.

To console themselves for being damp, they stopped at the macadamia nut factory.  Debbie walked in chanting “I will not buy nuts, I will not buy nuts”.  The chant was successful for Debbie but unfortunately Wendelin thought the chant was “I will buy nuts, I will buy nuts” and it was also a very successful chant for Wendelin.    The factory has asked Debbie if she would be willing to record that chant for them so that they could play it over the loud speakers.  Wendelin’s last words as she left were “I will be back”.  This lead to massive celebration within the factory.

It seemed that our travelers were left in Hawaii and you might wonder what happened.  Did they get home?  The answer is yes but one more story before they go.

Joyce, a founding member of Les Cheap Girls, could not resist participating in Scavengers, Inc.  While snorkeling, she noticed an item on the bottom of the ocean.  She circled it a few times and decided that it was a Go Pro.  What?  She found a Go Pro.

The problem was that Joyce could not get down to retrieve the Go Pro.  She kept circling the camera like a vulture guarding her dinner.  Eventually she approached a man snorkeling close to her. Let’s call him Tom. (Not sure how this is possible to approach a stranger swimming but Joyce did it).   Joyce struck a deal with Tom.  If he dove down and retrieved the GoPro, Tom could keep the GoPro stick while Joyce got the GoPro.  (Luckily, Tom already had a GoPro but no stick).  Tom did it!  Joyce and Tom swam away happy.  Joyce shared the news of her find with the other Silver Surfers.   The battery even had some charge left on it.

Shortly after the find, the Silver Surfers took the camera and fled Hawaii.  They are busy planning their first action video for Youtube.

After the difficult day on the 26th, the Silver Surfers decided to change direction and go for the triple crown.  The first jewel in the crown was to eat the masaladas purchased from the Punaluaa Bakery.  Check!  A traditional sugar masaladas, one mango masalada, one passion fruit and some other type of masalada all eaten.

They  then went for the final stop, another visit to the macadamia store for free samples.  It was a big day.  Masaladas, shaved ice and macadamia nuts in one day.  There was no dinner for the Silver Surfers that night.

There is a beach in Hawaii that has green sand.  It is by the South Point of the Big Island.  The green sand is created by a common mineral in Big Island lava called olivine, which stays deposited on this beach because it is heavier than the other components of the lava.  There are only 4 of these beaches in the world.  So, off the Silver Surfers go to find the beach hoping it doesn’t rain.

Before the stop at South Point, they stopped for lunch.   The Silver Surfers stopped at Manuka State Park and solved the “Chicken Mystery”.  The chickens are living at the State Park.  The chickens immediately sent over an emissary to speak to Joyce.  (Let’s call him Bruce, the chicken).  Bruce kept circling the table and got very excited when the food came out.  Joyce got excited when  Bruce got excited.  Larry as designated  chicken security had to get firm with Bruce and chased him around the parking lot.  Bruce left in a snit and the Silver Surfers left for the next destination.  They were so shook up with the Bruce incident that they decided that they needed some malasadas at Punaluu.  Culinary Moment:  What is a malasada?  A malasada is a Portuguese confection, made of egg-sized balls of yeast dough that are deep-fried in oil and coated with granulated sugar. The rain cancelled the Green Beach hike but the group still wanted to hike.  So, they decided to go back to the Manuka State Park where the sun was shining for a nature walk.  Yes, you heard it, right back to the chicken park where Bruce and his harem live.  The park has a nature walk.  Let’s talk about the walk and how they felt about the nature walk.

Jerry:  I hated the bugs.  I left the others behind because I was running from the bugs.  It was every man for themselves

 Joyce:  I hated the mosquitoes that were biting me.  I  was also worried about Bruce and his friends chasing me through the tropical wonderland.  I kept looking for Jerry but decided that he was on his own.

Larry:  I hated that the trail was not cleared.  I was left with Debbie and Joyce.  I was afraid that I was going to have to haul them over the dead trees.

Debbie:  I hated crawling on the ground under the trees.  I thought that I was going to have to haul Larry over the dead trees.

There was an unanimous opinion that this was the worst hike that they had ever been on.  They have hiked in Canada, Montana, Idaho, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.  This was by far the worst hike that they had taken.  Silver Surfer advice:  DON’T DO IT!  (As a side note – Bruce was seen crowing triumphantly as the group drove away).

As a consolation prize, the group  ate at the Pine Tree Cafe, (Debbie doesn’t understand the significance of the name as there doesn’t seem to be any pine trees in Hawaii.)

What will the Silver Surfers do now that the Paradise Homies have left?  No advance team…no exciting adventures.  Well, they have been doing lots of stuff.  They have been going to the beach, searching for whales, shopping in the rain and sun, walking around 4 star hotels like they belong and exploring.

Whale watching from land:  Here are the steps –  Get up high, stare at the sea looking for a water spout, spot one, scream it out, and then agree that you saw it breach whether you did or not. (Debbie just waits for someone else to find it).  The group saw whales logging.  Whale moment:  Logging is a behavior that whales exhibit when at rest and appear like “logs” at the surface. Adventure:  Upolu Airport is a small regional airport next to the Hawi wind farm.  It is windy and we have read that it is difficult to land an airplane next to a wind farm.  The Silver Surfers have agreed to continue using the Kona airport especially since no one seemed to be at the airport.   You can also visit Mo’okini Heiau. It is one of the oldest and most sacred heiau (places of worship) in the Hawaiian Islands and is one of the first luakini heiau in the islands. Today, Mo’okini Heiau is considered a living spiritual temple and a sacred site to Native Hawaiians.  It is down a muddy lane and we actually never found it but we would have if we weren’t worried about getting stuck and being the only ones at a spooky place.

To thank the advance team, both groups went to the Red Water Cafe in Waimea.  The restaurant got a “thumbs up” from everyone.  Since many of you like to view and comment on our food section, we have included pictures of the dinner.

The advance team has been busy.  There is a rumor that some of them went to a luau.  An even more persistent rumor is that Aaron was called to the stage to show off his dancing skills.  However, this can’t be confirmed by any pictures or documentation.  Some pictures were shown around the apartment but unfortunately did not make it to the blog.  There is a suspicion that Aaron has destroyed the evidence or never danced.  Silver Surfers demand proof.

Meanwhile, Lindsey drew the short straw.  happily spent the evening with the Silver Surfers.  They took her to the Four Seasons to see the turtles and the sunset.  (Who wouldn’t want to spend time with Silver Surfers instead of going to a luau?).  They even saw a wedding on the beach.  (Did you know that you don’t need any witnesses just the officiant in Hawaii?  We volunteered to help at the wedding – photographs, witnesses but were declined.)

What have the Silver Surfers been doing while the Paradise Homies have been busy?  Debbie and Larry continue with walking.  They walk every morning.  They have a set route which involves about an hour of walking around the resort and down to the grocery store – then back.  On one of their trips, Debbie noticed Boogie Boards being carried out of an empty room.  She cleverly watched as the boogies boards were transported around the resort  on golf carts.  Debbie felt like a detective.  While Larry kept saying “What?  What are we doing?”  Debbie tracked the boards to the dumpster, waited for the hotel staff to leave and snagged two boogie boards.  Larry and Debbie went running down the road with two boards in tow.  (As best you can run down the road with boogie boards).  They put the boards outside the PH Group’s flat in case any questions came up.  They were so successful that Debbie and Larry have set up Scavengers, Incorporated which is a subsidiary of Les Cheap Girls.  Total savings $60.00.

The Paradise Homies took those Boogie Boards and went to the beach.  Lindsey and Aaron reported that the boogie boards seem to be in good working order.  (As good as the rentals).  Although, the life guards did yell at the PHs over the loud speakers.  Aaron said it was to compliment his Boogie Board footwork.  However, there is a disputed account of “Hey, you on the Boogie Board, yes you – stop doing that.  Hey, where did you get that Boogie Board?  I think that looks like my boogie board. ”
 

The Silver Surfers were not excited when the PH group started sending pictures of their breakfast selections.   Where were they?  How did they get to  Waimea?   Imagine their shock when, the Silver Surfers found that PH was at the Hawaiian Style Cafe eating without them.  The Silver Surfers had been left behind.  (Debbie had been endlessly droning on about the pancakes since she got to Hawaii so maybe that had something to do with being left behind).  No need existed for the advance team to check it out.  Lindsey said that she did not eat anything in support of the Silver Surfer’s absence.  (This is what she says and no pictures exist of her eating).   They didn’t even bring back any left overs.  Debbie was so very sad.

Today (Feb 21st), the Silver Surfers made it to the Hawaiian Style Cafe.  They were given a big table because it was clear to the staff that they meant business.  Debbie got her pancakes.  Larry went for the Big Boy breakfast.  Jerry got the Loco Moco dish.  ( Loco Moco – When gravy is poured atop of a fried egg stacked on a thick hamburger patty, piled on top of white, sticky rice.  It could be called comfort food on a paper plate).  Joyce opted for lunch.  Everyone brought back leftovers to share except for Jerry.   He cleaned his plate!
