2017-08-26 Frankfurt or Amazing Race?
Debbie and Larry arrived in Frankfurt after being awake for 19 hours. The first hurtle was to get through passport control in Frankfurt. Check – no problem.
Task 2 – find the train to take them to the Hauptbahnhof station in Frankfurt. (Notice this says find not take – this is so complex that it had to be split into multiple tasks). Debbie had instructions. Larry’s job was to spot the “Train” signs which he did. The two were given some incorrect information from an Information center which Debbie now calls “Fake information”. This caused them to wander outside yet never lost sight of the entrance door as they held true to the fundamental belief that the train station must be somewhere inside the airport and not outside. (What?) After a couple of minutes, the pair went back to the information center with Larry yelling out “Don’t ask that same guy, he doesn’t know what he is doing”. The caused Larry to receive his first stink eye of the day. (Hello, Debbie knows not to ask the same guy). The real information guy (Not fake guy) sent them to the tram which took them to the train station where everyone in the airport seemed to be lined up. They were able to navigate through with Larry giving Debbie a stink eye for lagging behind and finally found the ticket area. (Stink eye Score 1 and 1 – Debbie and Larry now awake for 20 hours).
Doesn’t Amazing Race have a road block? Something that keeps you have doing what you need to do. Something where one person (Debbie) does the roadbock while the other stands and offers encouraging smiles. (Larry needs some work on his role) – Meet the Roadblock – Buying a **&@ (insert your own word here) ticket…. There were 6 kiosks. Three on each side. Let’s track Debbie’s progress:
- Kiosk 3 – Won’t convert to English even when you slap the machine a few times
- Kiosk 4 – Won’t take the people in front or my credit card
- Kiosk 2 – Won’t take the people in front or my money
- Buy a drink to get exact change (water but should be something else)
- Encouraging partner comments that no one else seems to be having issues (Larry receives another stink eye )
- Debbie discovers that she still does not have correct change
- Debbie stands in line again
- Debbie delivers stink eye to person cutting in line ahead of her
- Kiosk 2 – Will not take money – discover it is credit card only
- Debbie follows a local who is also having issues on kiosk 2
- Kiosk 5 – Local successfully buys ticket
- Kiosk 5 – Rejects Debbie’s 5 euro note
- Kiosk 5 – Local helps Debbie put in different bills after very sad looks from Debbie
- Kiosk 5 – Tickets are printed – Roadblock complete

Stink eyes Larry – 2, Debbie 1, Unknown person – 1 Debbie and Larry awake 21 hours straight
Next task – Get on the train – Larry receives another stink eye for questioning the track number – Stink eye Larry 3, Debbie 1, UNP – 1)
Larry and Debbie stare bleakly off the train until Debbie’s new friend points at her and gives her the nod to get off the train. They stagger off the train at the Hauptbahnhof station ready for the final task of finding the hotel. This involved going outside and circling the building (the really large building) with several stink eyes being exchanged (score is no longer important) until the hotel was found.
It was with extreme anticipation and visions of comfy beds that they threw open the hotel door to find the temperature similar to a closed-up garage on a hot Houston summer day. The kind of heat that can cook an egg on the sidewalk. They were so sad as the sweat beaded on their little foreheads.
On the up side, one of their Amazing Race prizes was to receive a call from cousin Erika. She had just arrived at about the same time and they were delighted to see her. After unsuccessfully trying to navigate the hotel phone system, they walked to Erika’s room to discover a nice cool room and became squatters.
Debbie sat across from Larry and watched as his eyes started to close and his head jerked down. Debbie and Erika decided the three would eat lunch. Larry graciously volunteered to stay at the hotel and wait for Jerry and Joyce while Debbie and Erika went to eat. (Uh huh, yeah – we know where you will be waiting – stretched out). Debbie insisted that Larry come along for lunch so both Larry and Debbie could be awake for 24 hours straight and share the victory together. (Larry kept trying to concede).
After lunch, they finally took short naps baking in their little hot and cozy room while they waited for the rest of the party to arrive.
Did we mention free mini-bar with lukewarm water and a pack of open salami? Maybe this was an additional Amazing Race prize?
Two observations: (1) I have never known anyone to miss the main train station in a large European city and (2) why didn’t larry just fix the AC. He can do anything.
So glad I haven’t been there in the hot part of the summer, because I know many places don’t have AC.

Sorry I posted twice – I think I can see the stink eye.
Aloha! Reading Your adventures getting to Germany brings back memories of my visit last year. I joined Joyce, Jerry, Erika in the Rhineland… after the trek thru Paris, Rome, Athens, etc. it was 23hr 50min flight from Hawaii. Yes, the airport, bahnhof experience sounds familiar. Aaaaah…glad u guys finally made it to Frankfurt and found Erika. Looking forward to the posts. Yippie
We didn’t miss the train station but the hotel next to the train station. Larry could have fixed that A/C if they only had some. At least we had a fan.
