Today was the “Show”.  They big day to face the bikers in Amsterdam.  However, Jerry was not feeling well and could not go.  (The other three had their suspicions that he might not be up to facing the bikers.).

So off they went to Amsterdam.  Cultural Moment:  Amsterdam is derived from a village being built around a dam of the river, Amster.   Get it? Amsterdam. Most of the Netherlands is below sea level.  Dykes, dams and pumping of water helps keep the water away.

It was amazing how many bikes were in Amsterdam.  The bikes have no mercy and the riders seem to go as fast as they can.  It is everyone for themselves.   The three think maybe there is a reward system if you take down a pedestrian.   The train station has walkers, bikers, trams, trains and buses all leaving at the same time.  Our team walked in a V shape to try to cover all sides.  After zigzagging down the street and dodging a bus and tram, they decided to take a canal tour.

The trio learned that things get thrown in the canals.  On an annual basis, about 50 cars are pulled from the canals followed by 500  sunken boats and approximately 15,000 bikes.  (Debbie thinks that she might have to stop the other two from throwing some bikes into the canal).  Amsterdam buildings are not straight because they are not on secure ground.

After the boat ride, they went on a walk through Amsterdam.  One of the  surreal moments was walking down a busy shopping street with an organ grinder playing  only to step into a small peaceful church, De Papegaai Catholic Church.  The group also visited the Begijnhof .  Cultural Moment:  The Begijnhof  leads to a medieval inner courtyard where the women of the Catholic sisterhood lived.  There are churches and houses for the single women.   One of the tour guides traveling through commented that the Mayflower Pilgrims prayed in one of the churches before the ship left.  (This is unconfirmed).

Now for some exciting news.  Joyce and Larry joined the hot dog across Europe campaign for the day.  (Debbie says that some were more excited than others about participating).

The final stop for the day was the Flower Market.  When Debbie saw the flowers, she might have squealed.  It was overwhelming.  There were flowers and people everywhere.

Debbie, Joyce, and Larry headed back to Haarlem diving and dodging bikes on the way back.  They didn’t feel like that they had successfully handled the “show”.  (There is suspicion that Jerry stayed home and watched TV.)

Note:  We have been off the grid for the last few days.  We were in an area with no internet coverage but no one seemed to have noticed.  There will be some double entries the next couple of days as we catch up.
