Everyone (maybe not Debbie) seems to be adjusting to the Irish way of life. They want to start everyday with an English breakfast. (Again maybe not Debbie. She has issues with tomatoes and beans. ) The group was able to walk to Mac’s Deli to find that perfect English breakfast.
The objective for today was a walking tour of the walled portion of Londonderry or Derry depending on whether you are a loyalist or nationalist. Londonderry is in Northern Ireland. The group took a walking tour led by our tour guide dressed in yellow. (Debbie suspects that some past tour clients have not been attentive and got lost in the past. Thus the yellow outfits.)
According to our guide dressed in yellow, Scottish settlers came and took the land from Ireland and this was when the trouble started. Again, according to our guide, the Scottish people were very hard workers while the Irish like to dance, party, etc – more artistic (Debbie says that she is part Scottish and Irish which might make her a hard working party person. Larry says in her dreams as you need to be able to stay up past 10.) This was the beginning of the “troubles”. (Debbie feels that she needs to point out that there are other causes for the troubles depending on your guide.)
Much of the tour concentrated on the “troubles”. The tour saw the site of the Bogside Massacre. History Moment:. Bloody Sunday, sometimes called the Bogside Massacre, was an incident on 30 January 1972 in the Bogside area of Derry, Northern Ireland, when British soldiers shot 28 unarmed civilians during a peaceful protest march against internment in Londonderry . Interesting fact: U2’s song “Sunday, Bloody, Sunday” is about the Bogside Massacre.
Next the group went to the Stone fort of Grianán of Aileach . It sits on a hilltop overlooking the sea. Historic Moment: The origins of the Grianán of Aileach fort date back to 1700 BC. (Yes, BC not AD). It is linked to the Tuatha de Danann who invaded Ireland before the Celts and built stone forts on top of strategic hills. This trip required some sketchy roads where some people expressed doubt as to our destination. (The navigator, Debbie, was not happy that people doubted her and her three navigation systems.) There were also some local ladies hiking up the hill who stood in all the best photo opportunities for a long time. Debbie had to give them the stink eye to make them move.
