They drove to Dublin as their last trip destination (at least for Debbie and Larry). Driving on the left side with a bunch of cars can be stressful. When the group pulled up to the flat there was a sigh of relief from everyone including the car and unclenching of hands from the arm rests. It is a French car that is probably wondering “How the heck did I end up in Ireland?” The steering wheel in on the left side which is great for Joyce but the other drivers glare at Debbie for any imagined infractions. Debbie has threatened to throw her hands in the air like she is not driving to create chaos. However, Jerry and Larry didn’t want to have to deal with any angry Irish drivers so she relented.

Luckily, there was a bus stop right outside the flat. Joyce, the transportation czar, was able to help Debbie figure out the appropriate direction and bus. They did get kicked off the first bus because they did not have exact change. Technically, Debbie argues that 13.00 pounds made up of a 10 pound note and 3 – 1 pound notes is exact change. However, in Ireland it needs to be no folding bills all change. Thus requiring an ungraceful exit from the bus to regroup. The group just needed to get downtown for a city bus pass.

Riding the city bus is not for the weak of heart. Debbie and Jerry almost got thrown down the stairs with some of the hard, quick start and stops. The group’s theory is that not many tourist ride the city bus. The group received a lot of help delivered in fine Irish accents that they could not understand without consulting each other. Debbie got called over by one woman, quizzed and patted on the arm repeatedly. Overall the bus crowd was friendly but safety first was not the bus driver’s motto. Not even close.

They rode the bus to the City Center and exited with the Dublin spire in sight. Cultural Moment: The Dublin Spire was unveiled in 2002. The huge, striking and innovative (we didn’t write this) monument of the Spire stands in the middle of O’Connell Street just across from the famous General Post Office (A Troubles location). Debbie didn’t realize that it was a monument for 3 days. She thought is was some type of temporary communication tower. She would have voted for something else for the monument.

The next stop was Christ Church. Another Cultural Moment:
Christ Church Cathedral, more formally The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, is the cathedral of the United Dioceses of Dublin and Glendalough. Christ Church Cathedral was founded in 1030 by King Sitriuc Silkbeard and Dunan, the first Bishop of Dublin. (Debbie wants to meet someone named Silkbeard). Joyce and Debbie toured the church. Jerry and Larry stayed outside as they preferred to save their money in case they needed more exact change on the bus.

Happily, the group was able to buy 3 day bus passes so are set for the remainder of the time in Dublin. Debbie is thinking of investing in some rope to tie herself onto the seat.

Some of the tour buses went to the Burren but it is not the #1 attraction in Ireland. Debbie is pretty sure it is not even in the top 10 unless you like limestone rocks.

There are two paths that run along the cliffs, an official path back away from the cliff and the unofficial path along the edge of the cliff. Debbie, our little rule follower and fearful of cliffs, stayed on the official path. She climbed over wire fences to stay on that path. Larry and Joyce were more unofficial path people (no surprise there) while Jerry’s path was determined by the amount of mud on the path. They hiked up and down the path and splashed in and out of the mud(. Debbie did deliver some stink eyes when people made her step in the mud).

They ate lunch outside at a picnic table where Debbie proved her bravery by chasing birds away from Joyce. She was pretty successful except for the German couple right behind them that kept feeding the birds.

After lunch, the group began the drive home battling the bus traffic for the attractions. Debbie tried to ride the middle console. (Remember, they are driving on the left side of the road). On the way home, they stopped at Dunguaire Castle. This is a castle along the road and close to our flat. Larry thinks that he could live there. The group had trouble getting Larry into the car to go home.

There were some issues getting to the farmhouse.  The new gps had the car drive down the wrong side of the freeway looking for the house.  There were large plants hiding the houses.  The group eventually found the red gate and the house.  The house was one of the nicer places they stayed.

Much of the tour concentrated on the “troubles”. The tour saw the site of the Bogside Massacre. History Moment:. We are going to finish this trip blog if it takes until 2020.  The clock is ticking as  a new trip begins in February.  Joyce and Jerry have already begun their trip.  Six days are left.

Our travelers were last at Larry’s birthday meal.   The next day the group headed for the Cliffs of Donegal.  They arrived at the parking lot to discover sheep.  (Debbie thinks that these are probably her sheep as they are pink and she would have pink sheep if she had to pick a color.  So she claims all pink sheep )  The parking lot has a road continuing onward with a gate.  There is a lot of discussion about do you drive through the gate to the higher parking area or walk.  The next stop actually begins the hike.  Joyce supplies the information that it is 2.5 miles to the next stop so this could involve at least a 5 mile walk round trip.  While the view is great is it 2.5 miles great?  Pretty much the four stand by the road and look at the gate.  (Debbie’s sheep don’t supply any tips).  They stare at people coming in and out of the gate trying to decide why some walk and some drive.  This involves serious discussion as they gather around the gate.

They begin talking to a lady that works at the US state department who is also staring at the gate.  Let’s call her Sue Ellen.  Sue Ellen decides to go for it so the four run and jump in their car to follow Sue Ellen. (They think she might have some sway if they get busted and are willing to throw Sue Ellen under the bus their leader).  Plus they only have to close the gate not open it.

Debbie is thrilled on the way to the next stop as it only goes up for 2.5 miles and she sees people walking on the road looking mad (because they made the wrong choice and walked).

Once the group made it to the next parking lot and shared high fives all around, they hiked part way along the Donegal cliffs.  The views were great but they turned around after an hour or so because they did not bring their lunch.  Each step took them further from the food.  They returned to the entrance and discovered how to make giant shadow puppets.  It was difficult to leave the shadow puppets and Debbie’s sheep.
