Our first full day in Paris began with a few technical difficulties.  Our plan was to get up at 8 and leave at 9 with a stop for croissants followed by a leisurely stroll to the opera house for a 10:20 tour and then begin using our difficult to obtain museum passes.    Unfortunately, Debbie woke up at 8:20 and began scurrying around trying to make up time.  Elsie also began scurrying in a frantic way.  Lisa had gotten Elsie up at 8:45 making Debbie feel better.  Then Lisa announced that her museum pass was missing and looked meaningfully at Elsie and Debbie.  After much hunting, the pass was discovered in Lisa’s purse, the late comers were dressed, the 5 minute door locking ritual completed and they were off  although somewhat late.

We next stopped at the bakery as the tour would be sacrificed before the croissants and our navigator asked if we were walking in the correct direction to the Opera House.  The young clerk  smiled and said the Metro is across the street.  Lisa said “No, we are walking”.  The girl’s mouth fell open, she blinked and said “no, no, you must take the train, it is too far too far.”   They drug Lisa protesting to the Metro station.  Let me note at this point, that we like to be prepared and have everything laid out.  The trio had not planned on riding the Metro so we were shall we say unprepared and fumbled around..  Eventually, we jumped on a train thinking that we were going to Stop 8.  Turns out we were going to Line 8.  There is a big difference between stop and route but with the three combined brains were able to change routes and trains.  The result was that we shot out of the Metro at the Opera House at 10:29.  Bring it on Amazing Race!

Did I mention that it is raining?  Did I mention that the taxi driver dropped us off, pointed the group down the street mumbling “café” and jumped in the taxi with his generous tip leaving us on the sidewalk?.  The group wondered down the street in the rain and stopped under cover to figure out where we were.  Lisa did an excellent job unbeknownst to herself of getting us stop at the correct address.  While we were standing there, the owner found us .   He was extremely helpful getting us in the building and sending us up the elevator one at a time.  The elevator can hold 1 person and 1 suitcase or 3 people (we are iffy about the weight of those 3 people).  There was also a moment of panic when Debbie couldn’t figure out how to get out of the elevator and didn’t want to stand there yelling “Get me out”.  The other option is to go up 4 flights of a winding circular staircase.  We then went into intensive training on the door locks with Elise being designated the security officer. The next flight was better in that it was dark and only two seats per row.  However, Larry’s bags did not fit in the overhead thus involving packing bags around Debbie’s feet.  The travelers arrive in Spokane at 10:15 somewhat agitated and got to the room at 11:00 to find a constantly running toilet.  The good news is that they were in Spokane and were able to change rooms immediately.  Best of all, it was cool enough to need a jacket.  Did I mention that the hotel is in the middle of a pasture?

We said good-bye to Portugal with a day of travel to Spain.  Of course, being a more mature bus load this included several stops.  One of our stops was the ancient city of Merida, once the capital of Lusitiana  (Latin for the kingdoms of Spain and Portugal).  Merida contains more Roman ruins than any other city in Spain.   The buildings were reconstructed from the ruins.  It included a Roman theatre, amphitheatre, circus and roads, bridges, streets and aqueducts galore.  We also began to understand the Spanish rules a bit better.

Charlie, Charlotte, Larry and Debbie began their Roman tour by following the numeric map.  They spent significant time at stop 1 and 2, the Roman theatre and amphitheatre.  Larry really enjoyed being the center of the theatre and then amphitheatre.   The group had trouble getting Larry to leave the stage. Issues occurred with  stop 3.  The site had blocked off areas for work but no signs.  After circling stop 1 and 2 multiple times, no success.  (Did I mention that stop 1 and 2 were really large?)  The group concluded that there are no stop 3 or 4 available.  This really bothered some of our more structured members.  At this point, the group decided that they might be getting fussy as it was after 1 and no lunch yet.  How on Earth do the people in Spain wait so long to eat lunch?

Lunch was awesome!  On the bus to Merida, Spanish ham was discussed.  Not a nice thing to do if you don’t eat until 1:30.  Jesus helped us get a ham platter.  (We were approached by the gypsy lady again.  Debbie lay on her purse as a defensive action.)  After  lunch,  three of the group went to the Roman bridge while Charlie searched for the non-existent Jewish section.  The plan was to head back to the Roman ruins to complete the tour but discovered that they had closed down for siesta until 4.  Surprise!  Let me introduce you to siesta.

So what did we learn today?

• Larry begins to make a serious bid to challenge Charlotte as social king.  He uses Debbie as an aid asking for names of the other people.  If he could just get an ear piece to be fed the names more discreetly, the job would be easier.
